I really like the School House Rocks look of that.

In my (admittedly biased) opinion, Old School teaches people to use their imagination.  Instead of "Find skill then Rolls d20..." "I got a 26 what did I find when I searched the room"  You had to say "I look behind the painting hung over the desk"  "I pull out the drawers of the desk & look for false bottoms."  "I check under the rug, is there a hidden trap door?"  Sure some classes had abilities they could roll, but telling the DM/GM what you wanted to do could get you more specific results & maybe even avoid traps even if you weren't a Thief (Rogue for all you kids out there).  Player - "I open the chest from behind"  DM - "3 darts shoot out of the chest when the lid is lifted open.  If you had been in front of the chest you would have been hit."

It could be argued that that style of play could be used with more modern versions of D&D, but I have found that allowing for skill checks for everything tends to lead to more Roll-Playing than Role-Playing.  To speed up "We search the room" if nothing else.

But then people could accuse me for waving my cane & yelling at those darn kids to get off my lawn (^_^)

Ah, BECMI D&D, where I was nearly TPK'ed by some Kobolds.  I am feeling really ranty for some reason.

In the end, play whatever version you like.  For me I love the Old School & their clones like Castles & Crusades.
